Rzeszów znajduje się w województwie podkarpackim. Jest to centralne miasto aglomeracji rzeszowskiej. Rzeszów położony jest na pograniczu dwóch makroregionów: Kotliny Sandomierskiej i Pogórza Środkowobeskidzkiego oraz na pograniczu Pogórza Karpackiego i Kotliny Sandomierskiej nad rzeką Wisłok. Miasto leży na granicy dwóch jednostek tektonicznych północnej i południowej, północna to zapadlisko podkarpackie, a południowa to płaszczowizna skolska.
