Szczyrk jest miastem typowo turystyczno-wypoczynkowym. Leży w południowej Polsce, w województwie śląskim, u podnóża pasma górskiego Beskid Śląski. Szczyrk położony jest nieopodal Wisły, Żywca i Bielsko-Białej, na wysokości od 470 do 1257 m n.p.m. Posiada rozbudowaną bazę noclegową, szereg stacji narciarskich i szlaków turystycznych, co sprawia, że jest miastem atrakcyjnym do wypoczynku latem jak i zimą. Historia miasta sięga XVI wieku, kiedy po raz pierwszy dokonano spisu ludności na potrzeby podatkowe kościoła. Okres bezpośrednio po I Wojnie Światowej miał największy wpływ na rozwój miasta i infrastrukturę, ponieważ był to czas inwestycji przede wszystkim w branżę turystyczną. Powstawały pierwsze bazy noclegowe, schrony turystyczne i schroniska turystyczne, które wcześniej stanowiły poaustriackie koszary i lazarety.
